Riffboard
Catch the riff before it disappears.

Most musicians know the moment: an idea arrives in the middle of playing, and by the time you reach for notation software, the shape of it is already gone.
The premise
Traditional notation workflows assume you are ready to write music down. Riffboard assumes you are still playing — that the valuable part happens before transcription hardens the thought.
The product began as a question about capture: what would it look like to treat a riff as a reusable object rather than a frozen score?
The product
Riffboard is a desktop application for guitarists and other musicians who work from sound first. It captures what you play through a microphone or audio interface and turns passing ideas into riffs — organized as Rifflets you can revisit, compare, and develop.
Each capture carries its musical context: notation, tablature, and the raw performance that produced it. Export to MusicXML when the idea is ready to leave the sketchbook.
Selected capabilities
- Microphone capture from live playing
- Audio-interface capture from line or instrument input
- Rifflets — reusable musical objects, not one-off transcriptions
- Notation and tablature in context
- MusicXML export
- Capture-first workflow: organize and develop after the idea lands
Current state
Riffboard is a released product, available through the Microsoft Store.
It is actively maintained. Transcription quality continues to improve; the capture philosophy does not.
